here's what i got from my dentist before, when i had similar problem:

1st:Determine which tooth has the pain and gently remove any debris lodged there using dental floss or a toothpick. Be careful not to stick the toothpick into the cavity because it can cause severe pain.
2nd: have the child rinse vigorously with warm water while you soak a small piece of cotton in oil of cloves. After your child spits out the warm water,
3rd:gently place the oil-soaked cotton into the cavity. This will provide temporary relief until you can get the child to the dentist.

...i think providing temporary relief like analgesics could also help. well depending on the child's age though.

how about some ice on the toothache. i find that ice really helps with tooth related pain. i think some paracetamol is also OK for toothache.

a toothache at that age is quite early. why not train them to brush their teeth before sleeping and make them stay away from sweets?
