I think that there is a thin line that separates common cold from a flu. How does one differentiate one from the other?

It's very similar but yes, there is a difference. Common cold is self limiting, you have cough, minor headaches, clogged nose... all those mentioned can also be found in flu... the difference is, you catch a flu through a virus.. so you would really need medication since it can cause serious problems. Flu is usually accompanied by a high fever.

you get flu through a virus? I thought viral infections are self-limiting... would it mean that the common cold and the flu are both self-limiting? just a thought.

actually Miley'79 colds and flu come from a virus. you also need medicine for colds not just flu.

the main difference is the kind of virus that you get. with a cold its just runny nose and sneezing. with the flu you have body pains, fever and headaches. flu also lasts longer than colds.

to GeorgiaM. - what do you mean by self limiting???
