I've been having major dental issues for my son the past month and now I need to decide what to do for his next treatment. What would you choose?

#1) New laser technology treatment who is not a pediatric dentist. Requires only topical anesthetic but my child must be very still. Sprays a lot of water and makes a clicking noise other than that should feel almost no pain.

#2) Go back to pediatric dentist and have him on meds (Versed) which makes him drowsy, with no bodily control and supposed to have amnesia affect of the dental treatment. Drills would be used which is the thing that freaks my son out completely!!! Even on the meds he finds the strength from being almost unconscious to turning into the incredible hulk once the drill starts. He has to be papoosed (velcro blanket for restraint). My son is deathly afraid of the drill even while medicated and on laughing gas (not effective).

I struggle with this decision because I do not want my son subjected to any more torture at the dentist. Due to his resistance his very first experience was so terrible he says he was literally "choked" and hands squeezed against his stomache by 2 assistants while the dentist performed a pulpotomy & filling.

MY regular dentist says to stick with pediatric dentist NOT this laser dentist and so did a couple other people. That even though he had bad experience he is still in better care under a ped. dentist.

Because of the traumatic experiences already at the traditional ped. dentist I wanted to try something new Waterlase, which is laser. I like the no drill and no fear factor of the drill for my son.

This is such a struggle for me since I have seen the terror in his face while in the dental chair. I saw the tears, his face red and eyes swollen. Him choking on his own saliva and coughing and gagging to catch his breath. I would do anything to not subject him to an ounce of stress.

I have an appointment this Thursday at both the pediatric dentist and the laser dentist. I need to cancel one.

What would you do?

in my opinion, i think the pediatric dentist is better. they have this way of handling the child well since it is their expertise and i think i will be more at ease with them handling my child.

Have you asked your son's pediatrician about how the anesthetic will effect him? If it doesn't effect him and the dentist has good credentials, it sounds like that would be a better route for your son.

If your pediatrician doesn't know much about, then I would just go with the pediatric dentist. I know the process is so much more harder on the child, but at least you know more background on the procedure.

It is unlikely your son will sit through the laser procedure without moving. Even without the drills, he's still going to be upset knowing having someone working inside his mouth.

I think you should go to another dentist for a second opinion before putting your son through any procedure. We did that for our kid and my husband and I are so thankful we did. Turns out she didn't need anything done. Some dentists are just looking to make money. They've had many reports on the news about that. And if they're restraining your son there's something very wrong going on. The things you described that happened to your son are NOT normal. I'm sorry but I don't know how you could even consider going back to that place. And I wouldn't do the laser thing either. Definitely find another pediatric dentist.

I wish I knew what they gave my daughter to chill her out....worked great as she was TERRIFIED going in. My other daughter could have cared less and they didn't even gas her! She got the little numbing shot and that was it. I would see if they can knock him all the way out....seems like a win/win!
