Surprised by the title--don't be! There actually are positives in being a single parent. I don't want to glamorize this situation or minimize the actual difficulty in being a single parent, but when you are forced into this situation you absolutely must recognize and work towards making this a positive and healthy situation for you and your children. The benefits of doing this will be long lasting, giving you and your children a happy, healthy home life.
This brings to mind the saying about the cup that could be half full or half empty. Life is a precious gift. Our children are examples of this gift. Take each day and approach it as a gift of time you have with your child. Approach your situation with total ,honesty. Your child will learn that we do not live in a perfect world, and yet we can and do survive.
I asked my son who is 9 and has has been living in a single parent home, what some positives were for him. The following thoughts were his:
• You get to celebrate everything twice such as Christmas, Easter, and of course your birthday.
• You get more attention, and your parents get free time for themselves.
• You actually get to build a closer relationship with your parents because the dynamics are you and them, not them together and you.
• You get to have a lot of sleep- overs if your parents like to date.
• You get to eat the food you like.
• It's easier to talk about things since you only have 1 parent around.
The key here is to always try to ensure that your child gets the benefit of both parents love. This love is their building block for their future confidence.
