There are actually different types of complications that can occur during pregnancy, and it happens on different stages, yet could be fatal. It is very important for a pregnant woman to have her routine pre-natal check ups.

what do you call that condition where a pregnant woman can bleed? and how does one know that you have that bleeding tendencies?

paula - February 25th, 2011 8:03 AM

Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy may or may not be serious but it can pose a serious risk to the mom or the baby. It can happen during the first trimester yet it may not always impose that it is miscarriage. However, any type of bleeding during pregnancy needs to be investigated.

i don't know if it is considered as a complication of pregnancy but my mom had a what they called as cord prolapse when she was giving birth to me. I was told that my umbilical cord came out first and they said it was dangerous. I'm the youngest of 4 siblings but I'm the only cesarean baby.

I believe that ectopic pregnancy can be considered a complication, right? How soon can one tell that she is having an ectopic pregnancy?

paula - February 25th, 2011 8:24 AM

dens --- it can be determined as early as 5-10 weeks. a pregnant woman should really be careful since ectopic pregnancy at an early stage resembles the normal pregnancy. One should really be vigilant of the warning signs.

laurie - February 25th, 2011 8:27 AM

early symptoms of ectopic pregnancy includes: lower back pain, lower abdominal pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, cramping on one side of the pelvis, nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure due to severe bleeding and rapid heartbeats.

morgan - February 25th, 2011 8:30 AM

dens- just an addition, ectopic pregnancy can be determined by basis of pelvic examination, ultrasound scan reports, urine pregnancy test and blood tests like determination of changes in the pregnancy hormones (human chorionic gonadotropin/HCG), hematocrit and white blood cell count. The tests like D and C, laparotomy and laparoscopy are done for the confirmation of ectopic pregnancy. It is really important that you consult your doctor once you suspect ectopic pregnancy.
