Asthma can also be common in children, that's why it is important for parents to know what the symptoms are and the ways of preventing an attack. Anyone interested to discuss about this? I'm pretty sure it could be helpful to new parents.

It is also a little hard to determine if a child does have asthma since its symptoms resembles other respiratory problems. It is important for parents to have their kids seen by the doctor if they suspect asthma.

what are the causes of asthma anyway? Is it plainly hereditary? or are their external factors that causes or triggers asthma?

christa_marks - February 25th, 2011 6:48 AM

There are actually a lot of factors that can contribute to causing asthma. It is actually just like an allergic reaction and allergens vary. It is also the reason why parents need to have their kids checked with their pediatrician to know what could have caused it. An example of which would be dust. Dust can trigger an asthma attack.

-symptoms may include chronic cough (especially during the night), and at times there's also wheezing especially if they are not at rest. Some parents may think of it as just good old cough, little do they know their kid might actually be already suffering from asthma.

hi all! my nephew has asthma and i find it really scary when he starts to have episodes of asthma attack. One good home remedy is steam inhalation. It helps them breathe easier.

haley - February 25th, 2011 6:59 AM

-yeah. that's right robbie. because their airways become inflamed and swollen, breathing becomes harder and may hurt. Steam inhalation can cause vasodilation -or in simpler terms it allows you to breathe better. your kid just needs to inhale the steam coming from hot water, as simple as that.

Christa provided one example of an allergen which is dust.
Allergens can actually be anything.
It can be animal dander, pollen, mold, cockroaches or even food.
All of which can trigger an attack.

Mrs. Smith - February 25th, 2011 7:04 AM

allergens are very common known factors that trigger an attack but did you know that being exposed to extreme changes in the weather can also do the trick? Changing in weather conditions, including changes in temperature or humidity is also a potential risk.

robbie - February 25th, 2011 7:07 AM

what I also notice with my nephew is that he seems to be allergic to strong perfume, sprays or strong odor. Whenever we use an insect repellent spray at home we noticed that it triggered an attack.

hey everyone... my 10-year old son has asthma and it breaks my heart to see my son undergo an attack...He really wanted to join the soccer team at school but he's not allowed to play since strenuous activities can cause an attack. It's really sad :(

Mrs. Smith - February 25th, 2011 7:12 AM

olivia - there are other sports activities that your son can still join even if he has asthma. Perhaps, swimming? it can also be an enjoyable sport at the same time it helps children who has asthma.

olivia38 - February 25th, 2011 7:14 AM

mrs. smith - Oh yes, his doctor did suggest swimming as well. He does enjoy it but he is still a frustrated soccer player. He just have to do with what he can for now. thanks, anyway. :)

Asthma can be triggered in different ways. Knowing the asthma triggers for your children can go a long way for prevention.

Allergic triggers:
a. Animal hair/fur such as that of dogs or cats
b. Pollens
c. Moulds
d. Dust mites
e. Virus infections
f. Pollutants in the air

Non-allergic triggers:
a. Smoke, perfumes, chemical fumes and other strong-smelling substances
b. Intense emotions
c. Cold air
d. Food additives

A nebulizer can come handy if you can afford one. Make sure to have the proper medicines for asthma stacked at home.
