Some kids, like mine, seem to stay awake no matter how hard you try to limit naps, etc.. It can drive a parent nuts when their child stays up all night long, night after night after night. I am one of those nutty parents. My son never goes to sleep before 3am - never. It has made daytime activities very difficult and morning anything is not an option. He is almost seven years old, so this is all normal for us now, but it really hasn't gotten any easier when he does stay up until the time when he'd be going to school, around 9am. Those nights are the worst. He has been prescribed medication to induce sleep, but it's a pretty heavy duty drug, so we avoid it. My research has shown that Melatonin (a naturally occurring hormone that we produce during sleep) is a good choice for children who need help to sleep. It can be bought at any Whole Foods store or vitamin shop. Benadryl will make most children sleepy, but for some children, it will have the opposite effect (are you willing to find out which kind of kid you have at 3am?!) Ha ha!). I have yet to try Melatonin, but everything that I have read is very positive about it. Has anyone else used it for their child?
