Aside from what we commonly know as hydrocephalus, there is also a condition called Anencephaly, where in the baby is born without brains. Naturally, these babies fail to survive.

born without brains???
how is that possible? I mean how come they survive long enough to be born yet they don't have brains... that's really sad :(
does that happen to anyone? or is related to heredity or something??

There are a lot of possible causes for anencephaly. There was one case I've heard at the hospital when my sister gave birth to her youngest.
Anyhow, a big portion of the brain was not developed and as well the upper portion of the skull. I couldn't understand HOW it happened but they said that rare case of heredity, low folic acid in the mom's diet and if the mother is taking other medications (i forgot exactly what) are possible causes.

- I believe it's when the mother is taking an anticonvulsant medication.
Aside from that undiagnosed diabetes is also linked with anencephaly.

This is one of the reasons why it is very IMPORTANT for mothers to have prenatal check ups and to take folic acid for early detection and more importantly to reduce the risk of developing anencephaly to the child.
