Babies will try to resist sleep to the point that they cry and wail and kick a lot. They try to fight it out and stay awake though they are feeling very tired and exhausted. They are still afraid to move from the waking state to the sleeping state since in general they don't really understand the normal process of life. They tire easily and they feel that the going to sleep is something dangerous. It is the same reason why it helps to sing a lullaby since babies find it safe and comforting and safe.

I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing! :)

As a parent I didn't particularly notice that behavior as you described. My only child and daughter who is 6 year old now, I remember when she was still an infant, only became restless when she was hungry. After finishing her bottle she'd go to sleep without much trouble.

I've read an article, I just forgot where (LOL!) but it did mention about what rebecca has described. It was stated there that it is the same feeling that adults get towards death. An adult's fear of death is equivalent to a child's fear when shifting from the waking state to the sleeping state.

Thanks a lot!
