how can i get my child to practice her reading skills? i was advised by her teacher to let her practice at home... she loses her attention after 5 minutes of reading... how did you help your child develop his or her reading skills??

you can start by reading her favorite bedtime stories or those kind of stories you are sure she would enjoy. If she gets tired then stop. You don't want to give her the impression that reading is a tedious thing to do.

set aside a fixed time for reading or studying. an hour a day is usually good. make sure that there is a reward after your tutoring session for inspiration. This usually works for me.

Example, my son needed help with multiplication so we memorized and used flash cards. As soon as we were done, I would fix him a burger and fries for his reward and snack.

It sounds like she has attention deficiency. Perhaps you can have her evaluated by an expert.

how old is she? if she is behind reading perhaps a tutor can help her if you dont have the time or patience. With a tutor the child gets another "authority" figure to listen to.

How about an interesting story book? This is how I taught my kids to read. Their favorite was Ferdinand the Bull. Very easy words and very good story. You should read this to each other.
