my baby is still sucking his thumb at 2 years. any advise on how to wean him from this?

JaneDoe - December 4th, 2010 2:36 AM

my mother told me she used to put some salt in my thumb to keep me from sucking. while I dont like the practice of thumb sucking, I let my daughter suck because the doctor told me this is soothing.

just gently pry his thumb out of his mouth while distracting him. like when you are talking to him about something interesting or while he is distracted with a video...

i dont like my kids to suck their thumbs too. it destroys the placements of their teeth. I just gently pry away their fingers.

i didnt let them thumb suck in the first place. even when they were still babies I would take their thumb off their mouths. They did not get into the habit.

sucking thumb can destroy their teeth. some kids even end up with buck teeth! so i think it is best to discourage this practice early.

I let them suck their thumbs. I read somewhere that stopping them from sucking can lead to oral addictions like drinking or smoking.

I let them suck too. I think this is just a soothing mechanism for their part or a way to cover up some insecurity. they usually grow out of it.

they will stop eventually. usually when they stop drinking from the bottle they stop sucking their thumbs too.

i think he will grow out of this! :)

just give him some time. my youngest was disgusted at around age 3... his saliva stank so he stopped sucking his thumb!

he or she will grow out of it. i remember my kids used to suck their thumbs too but this stopped when they started school.
