my 3-year old boy seems to be too shy.
I've seen other 3-year olds that mingle with other kids just fine but my son is the exact opposite. I'm really worried about him. He rather plays alone, he doesn't like the crowd. I don't want to think that this could be a possible sign for autism, is it? :(

Too soon to say the kid is autistic. A kid that young might be shy or not used to playing with other kids specially if he or she is an only child.

My sister has 2 kids. The older, Johan, one is now almost 5 years of age. Since they live in the western states, I'm in the east, I can't always visit them because of the distance and the work. That time, I last saw him in person when Johan was still 1.5 years. After, we video chat all the time.

I remember that when Johan was between 2 to 3 years, he would hardly talk to me on video. He would just stare at me all the time. I keep talking to him nonetheless. Eventually when he was a few months over 3 years old he started warming up to me. Talk a few words. Show me his toys. He started interacting. 4 years and now, he is always excited to see me on video.
