my son is only 3 yet he has developed a very cunning behavior. eachtime that he does not get what he wants he refuses to eat! i've been like that too when i wqs younger but not as young as my son is... i worry about his health as much i want to teach him the value of patience... how can i balance both?

Talk to your kid in a manner that he would understand. If he sees that method as effective, he would definitely us it again and again. Make your child understand why yo are not giving him what he wants, don't just say no.

I don't tolerate such behavior. My son used to do that as his means of "manipulating" me to get what he wants. I told him i won't feed him for the rest of the day if he won't eat.. well he always ends up eating anyway.
