Pica is an eating disorder common in children with developmental disabilities. They eat nonfood items like clay, dirt, chalk, glue, or worst feces! and the list goes on...
However, they can actually overcome this behavior that brought by their curiosity to their surroundings. There are also those who unfortunately continue and can be considered as a serious eating disorder in children.

Is PICA considered normal if it happens during early age?

Well, it's not supposed to be a "normal" thing, but it is common for children especially if their curiosity level is at its peak. it becomes a problem when a child ingests toxic things which could already be life threatening.

Does it just go away? or are there interventions that needs to be done to make it go away?

It's a constant effort for the child's loved ones to help the kid overcome the said disorder. The therapy is a combination of psychosocial, environmental and family guidance.

Differential reinforcement can be done. That is with positive reinforcement if pica is not attempted and consequences if pica is attempted.
