Hi! my friends newborn daughter was not released from the hospital since the doctor deemed the need for further evaluation. They suspect a possible meningitis.. We are confused because she seemed to have a normal pregnancy basing from her prenatal check ups. Could it be possible that the baby acquired from the hospital?

It is possible since meningitis is caused by virus or micro-organisms. meningitis in the first month of life is called neonatal meningitis and is caused by Group B streptococcus (GBS) followed by Escherichia coli (E. coli), Listeria monocytogenes and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

My question is if it can be treated and if there are no complications for newborns?

I believe there is antibiotic treatment that is given to people and infants who are struck by this disease.

Complications from menengitis include hearing loss, complications with memory, balance problem, seizures, problems with speech and in some cases it develops to cerebral palsy.

The longer the virus stays in your child's brain the more complications will arise. This is why time is of the essence for kids with Meningitis.
