Getting Pregnant

Once you've made the decision to have a baby there is no turning back. There is no other decision in a woman's life that is as exciting and momentous as this! On the other hand, conceiving a child should not be a spur of the moment decision. Getting pregnant requires much thought and planning. What should you be doing to make your body ready to harbor a pregnancy?

Preconception Counseling

One thing every woman should do during her childbearing years is to schedule a preconception counseling appointment. Your preconception counselor is ready and willing to help you figure out everything you need to know about making yourself and your environment ready for pregnancy. During your sessions, you will learn about diet, nutrition, and exercise and what you can do in advance of pregnancy to make sure all goes well. For instance, you'll be told to start taking folic acid.

It's probable that most women have no idea they should be taking folic acid before making the big decision to become pregnant. This is a case of: "what you don't know can hurt you (and your baby)." Folic acid prevents neural tube defects in your baby in the very first days of your pregnancy. You don't want to wait for a positive pregnancy test result to take this supplement. One never knows when the act of making love will succeed in making you pregnant. You'll want your baby protected from his very first hours.

Conception Sex

Of course, the most important thing is maximizing your chances of getting pregnant. Are there special sex positions you can use to enhance your success rate? What is the best time to have conception sex? How long do you have to wait after stopping the pill to go ahead and try to make a baby?

For young healthy couples, conception tends to be a quick and uncomplicated process. But for couples who waited until they were established in business and took their time making sure they were in stable relationships, fertility may not be an automatic bit of magic on which one can rely. We can help by explaining when you are at your most fertile times of the month and how to predict those times.

While you're trying to conceive you may discover that each month holds anxiety and hope as you wait for the signs and symptoms of pregnancy. We try to ease some of the stress you may experience by teaching you how to read the signs of your own body as well as provide information about the various pregnancy tests that are now available to help you confirm your condition or discover that you must keep trying. Most of all, we want you to relax and take a deep breath. It's all about the journey!
