what are the possible complications for measles?

itsmeAnna - April 16th, 2011 10:56 AM

If the child is unvaccinated it could lead to death.

This is from WHO:

The most serious complications include blindness, encephalitis (an infection that causes brain swelling), severe diarrhoea and related dehydration, ear infections, or severe respiratory infections such as pneumonia. As high as 10% of measles cases result in death among populations with high levels of malnutrition and a lack of adequate health care.

I remember getting my kids MMR shots when they were young and then the boosters as they got older. I think complications like these are pretty rare in developed countries.

It may be rare in countries like the US but they still happen. I remember a mother who had argued with a doctor in the ER because she did not want to give her baby shots because in her words it was just "PR" by the drug companies. So if there are stupid people, kids can get measels. :)
