Baby Shower Cakes

A baby shower cake is a great idea for an edible baby shower centerpiece; making a cake the ideal baby shower decoration! The host should usually either purchase a cake, or bake one and have guests arrive early to help decorate! Here are some baby shower cake decorating tips that are sure to be a hit with the guests, not to mention the guest of honor!

Plain Old Square Cake
Sometimes it's not the shape of the cake, but the flavor and the decorations. Use cake mix or your grandma's best cake recipe, then make it special. Invite all the baby shower guests to come an hour early to your house. Spread on a uniform icing (white is a good color choice), and buy lots of decorative icing and icing tubes. Have guests write their best wishes and names on the cake. If there's a particularly bright artist in the group, have them sketch a baby-related drawing. Be sure to take a picture of it before the cake is devoured! The baby shower cake pictures will be a nice reminder to the new mother.

The Infamous Baby Shower Diaper Cake
No, this cake is not edible; but it will help the new parents out with buying diapers! A diaper cake is basically three tiers of rolled-up diapers. These can be very decorative, and most diaper cakes aren't complete without extra baby gear, such as pacifiers and bibs, perched on the tiers. Making these cakes is relatively simple. Here's a run through of the most interesting baby shower cake designs.

The materials you need include 50 newborn diapers, about 50 feet of decorative string, some tape and one tall baby bottle. Now, start rolling up the diapers and tie each one with about a foot of string, so they stay in a tight roll. Once you've rolled and tied up all the diapers, take about five to eight diapers and arrange them around the tall baby bottle. Tape them to form a round tier around this baby bottle. About 15 bottles will make the next tier, tape again and tie with decorative string. Use the remaining diapers to make the bottom tier. This one can be tricky, so try to tape first 15 diapers together, then arrange the rest of the diapers surrounding this. Tape the entire bottom tier. Now stack the tiers on top of each other and insert the various baby items, such as bibs and baby combs. Need not refrigerate.
